FIFA has developed a quality concept to ensure the same surface standards for all fields worldwide. This certification program consists out of 5 steps. The first step starts with product development. Manufacturers of artificial grass must develop their products according to the quality standards set by FIFA.
The next step is elaborate testing of these products at FIFA accredited laboratories. FIFA has prepared these tests with greatest care and these test do not tolerate the any negative effect on the gameplay.

Firstly the rolling of the ball over the surface is tested ;
Vertical and diagonal bounce test are conducted secondly.

Surfaces are then accordingly tested for shock absorption and deformation;
This is done vertically as well as in a rotational movement.

After the surface passes the previous test it is submitted to a linear friction test in order to assure maximal player safety. Due to the use of studs, incorrect deceleration and acceleration can cause severe injuries to the player’s ankles

After the products have successfully completed these tests, the artificial grass is submitted to a weather durability test. In this test various weather conditions are simulated in order to see if the product is resilient enough. Products that meet all of the specified test are included in the FIFA recommended product category. These products then are accredited with a FIFA Quality or FIFA Quality Pro certificate. Periodic maintenance is an absolute necessity.
FIFA upholds 2 types of quality standards for artificial grass. After elaborate research together with professional player, medical staff and stake holders, FIFA first introduced “FIFA Recommended 1 STAR” in 2004 and later improved its standards with “FIFA Recommended 2 STAR” accreditation. FIFA recommended 2 STAR meets the highest demand for professional football.
Since January 1st 2017, FIFA has updated its certification system and has changed its names to FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro. The tests have gotten tougher and the standards higher in order to meet with modern professional footballs needs.
